(AP) ? A military official says Muslim holy books that were burned in a pile of garbage at a U.S. military base in Afghanistan had been removed from a library at a nearby detention center because they contained extremist messages or inscriptions.

A military official with knowledge of the incident told The Associated Press on Tuesday that it appeared the Qurans and other Islamic readings were being used to fuel extremism, and that detainees apparently were leaving notes for one another inside them.

The official, who did not want his nationality disclosed, spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the incident.

The top commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan says the books were inadvertently given to troops for burning.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP’s earlier story is below.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? More than 2,000 angry Afghans protested outside an American air base on Tuesday after they learned that copies of the Quran, the Muslim holy book, were burned in a pile of garbage at a sprawling U.S. military base north of Kabul.

“Die, die, foreigners!” the demonstrators shouted. Some fired rifles into the air. Others threw rocks at the gate of the base and set tires ablaze.

The burning of the Quran and other religious books was unintentional, said U.S. Gen. John Allen, the top commander of American and NATO forces in Afghanistan.

The incident stoked anti-foreign sentiment that already is on the rise after a decade of war in Afghanistan and fueled the arguments of Afghans who claim foreign troops are not respectful of their culture or Islamic religion.

Early Tuesday, as word of the incident spread, about 100 demonstrators gathered outside the sprawling Bagram Air Field in Parwan province. As the crowd grew, so did the outrage.

One protester, Mohammad Hakim, said if U.S. forces can’t bring peace to Afghanistan, they should go home.

“They should leave Afghanistan rather than disrespecting our religion, our faith,” Hakim said. “They have to leave and if next time they disrespect our religion, we will defend our holy Quran, religion and faith until the last drop of blood has left in our body.”

Ahmad Zaki Zahed, chief of the provincial council, said U.S. military officials took him to a burn pit on the base where 60 to 70 books, including Qurans, were recovered. The books were used by detainees once incarcerated at the base, he said.

“Some were all burned. Some were half-burned,” Zahed said, adding that he did not know exactly how many Qurans had been burned.

Zahed said five Afghans working at the pit told him that the religious books were in the garbage that two soldiers with the U.S.-led coalition transported to the pit in a truck late Monday night. When they realized the books were in the trash, the laborers quickly worked to recover them, he said.

“The laborers there showed me how their fingers were burned when they took the books out of the fire,” he said.

In a statement, Allen said he had ordered an investigation and offered his apologies to the president and people of Afghanistan. He thanked local Afghan workers “who helped us identify the error, and who worked with us to immediately take corrective action.”

“We are thoroughly investigating the incident and are taking steps to ensure this does not ever happen again,” Allen said. “I assure you, I promise you, this was not intentional in any way.”

Afghan Army Gen. Abdul Jalil Rahimi, the commander of a military coordination office in the province, said he and other officials met with protesters, tribal elders and clerics to try to calm their emotional response. “The protesters were very angry and didn’t want to end their protest,” he said.

Later, however, the protesters ended the rally and said they would send 20 representatives from the group to Kabul to talk with Afghan parliamentarians and demanded a meeting with President Hamid Karzai, Rahimi said.

The governor’s office in Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan called the incident a “shameful move by some stupid individuals.”

Zia Ul Rahman, deputy provincial police chief, said between 2,000 and 2,500 protesters demonstrated at the base.

“The people are very angry. The mood is very negative,” Rahman said while the rally was going on. “Some are firing hunting guns in the air, but there have been no casualties.”

Police said a similar protest on Tuesday just east of Kabul ended peacefully.

In April 2011, Afghans protesting the burning of a Quran by a Florida pastor turned deadly when gunmen in the crowd stormed a U.N. compound in the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif and killed three staffers and four Nepalese guards.

Separately, officials in Helmand province in the south said insurgents beheaded four people Sunday night in Washer district on the charge that they were spies.

“The militants told the local people that they were guilty because they were carrying satellite phones,” provincial spokesman Daoud Ahmadi said.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi said that the militant group was not involved in the killings.

Also in the south, a NATO service member died Tuesday as a result of a non-battle related injury. The U.S. led coalition gave no further details about the death. So far this year, 44 NATO service members have been killed in Afghanistan.

Paul Brandeis Raushenbush: Rick Santorum’s Political and Biblical Mistake

Sen. Rick Santorum has made a serious mistake.

On Saturday, the presidential hopeful was addressing a group in Ohio when he made the unfortunate assertion that Obama’s agenda is:

not about you. It’s not about your quality of life. It’s not about your jobs. It’s about some phony ideal. Some phony theology. Oh, not a theology based on the Bible. A different theology.

The first reason this is a mistake is that Santorum has decided to make the presidential campaign about religious orthodoxy and introduced theology into politics in an agressive way. His less than subtle message is that anyone who believes in the Bible, or even takes the Bible seriously, should be suspect of the President who is serving up ‘false teachings’ referencing Matthew 7:15 which reads: “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.”

Santorum’s recent comments should be a major turn off to anyone who understand that while all politics are informed by values, religious and secular, we should be very wary when politicians begin to assert religious creedal tests into electoral politics.

Earlier this year I spoke with Senator John Danforth who has thought a lot about religion and politics. Senator Danforth reminded me that:

The language of politics is different than the language of religion — politics is not religion. The language of religion is based on creedal affirmation, while the language of politics, when it works, is the language of compromise. To confuse politics for religion results in gridlock from the political perspective. To confuse politics for religion from the religious perspective is idolatry.

The second mistake by Sen. Santorum is that his casting stones and judging President Obama’s biblical understanding comes at a time when serious questions have to be asked about Sen. Santorum’s own grasp of biblical teachings.

At the Detroit Economic Club, Sen. Santorum explained his position on income inequality between the rich and the poor saying: “There is income inequality in America. There always has been and hopefully, and I do say that, there always will be.”

Senator Santorum stated this hope for the inequality between the rich and the poor in Detroit — a city that has suffered from enormous deprivation in the past decades. As Charles Blow reminded readers in the New York Times: “Among the more than 70 cities with populations over 250,000, Detroit’s poverty rate topped the list at a whopping 37.6 percent, more than twice the national poverty rate.”

Mr. Santorum should be careful in his efforts to score political points using biblical mandates on the same week that he shows such callousness towards the lives of the poor. If we know anything about the concerns of the prophets of the Hebrew Bible and of Jesus of the New Testament, it is that they had harsh words for the rich who grow richer while the poor suffer, and the inequality in America over the last 30 years has become biblically blasphemous.

Rick Santorum was wrong to make his campaign about religious orthodoxy, and wrong again about religious orthodoxy when it came to his own campaign.

Luke 6:20-21 Then he looked up at his disciples and said: ‘Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. ‘Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. ‘Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.

Luke 6:20-21 Then he looked up at his disciples and said: ‘Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.

‘Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. ‘Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.

Discussing Home Security with Family Members can Prevent Home …

Most homeowners are interested in equipping their property and families with enhanced security systems in order to prevent crimes and protect safety and well-being. The home security market is populated with scores of individual units and systems designed to help homeowners achieve this goal, and there are many effective ways in which security tools and services can both prevent unwanted activity and respond to any breaches that occur. Sometimes, however, some of the most common-sense security tips go overlooked, possibly because of their relative simplicity or the unavailability of a convenient product to carry out the task at hand. One of the most important ways to protect a home against invasion is simply talking to family members about how the household plans to approach any related activity, yet many families neglect to carry out this crucial step. By designating a small amount of time in which to hold a household-wide meeting, families can explore the many angles of home security and can ensure that their properties are better able to stand up to the risk of invasion.

Home invasion may seem like a crime that only occurs when perpetrators force their way through locked doors or windows or otherwise gain unauthorized entry, but in fact, many invasions occur when occupants willfully allow the criminal into the home. People with the intention of robbing a residence or causing harm to its owners may pose as professionals or safety personnel, or may even show up on a doorstep sounding distressed and in need of help. While most people desire to assist those in need and may feel obliged to open the door for those who seem to have a legitimate reason to be on the property, it can be dangerous to trust people who arrive unexpectedly. As a result, it?s important to have a good sense of who should be allowed into the home, and in what types of situations a door should even be opened in the first place. Often, families fail to discuss these issues amongst themselves, and family members may have vastly different ideas about when and how to open doors and allow access. By discussing these themes with one?s family, homeowners can create a solid layer of protection against invasion, no matter who happens to be home at the time of an attempt.

Suspicious activity on and around a property may also be a cause for concern among those worried about the threat of a home invasion. Reminding family members to be aware of their surroundings and to examine suspicious situations is a wise move, though discussing how precisely to act when such situations arise is also critical. Families may decide that certain types of activity are grounds for calling local police or emergency numbers, or are simply cause for alerting an older member of the family or a neighbor. A home?s occupants, especially those who are young, may feel hesitant about acting at all when confronting suspicious behavior, typically because they?re not sure of what type of response is appropriate. When families take the time to discuss proper responses and to have a conversation about what constitutes suspicious behavior and what is probably fine, occupants can feel more confident about being a part of their own security systems.

Though households may employ many different methods, including family-wide discussions, in an attempt to prevent home invasion, such an event is still a possibility. It can be far more comfortable to imagine that such a crime will never take place than to think about how to respond if it does, but this choice can be disastrous. Families should sit down together and discuss the best options for taking action in a home invasion actually does occur. Whether it?s a reminder of evacuation and exit plans, instructions about which phones or other devices to use to call for help, or how to behave so as to stay calm and increase chances of escaping or launching a counter-attack, a family?s discussion about home invasion can go a long way towards improving its security profile. When households feel more prepared to face the possible dangers of a home invasion, they?re more likely to act effectively and decidedly during an actual invasion event, potentially contributing to a lower incidence of injury or financial loss.

The desire to protect a home against invasion leads many people to outfit their properties with expensive and sophisticated security equipment. While such systems can indeed play a part in protecting a home, it?s important to remember that sharing information and discussing security issues can?t be replaced with products. When families make a point of forming and discussing specific security plans surrounding the risk of home invasion, they can count on better protection and less difficult consequences from crimes that do take place on their properties.
