With home values still depressed?and likely to remain so in the coming year?many people who plan to start businesses won?t be able to leverage their personal properties to raise capital they need.

There are several alternatives, however, some newer than others.

Some 39% of business owners with less than $5 million in annual revenues said a bank loan would be the best way to raise capital in 2012, according to a survey of 2,851 owners of small businesses conducted by Pepperdine University in early January. Other top prospects were personal savings (36%), friends and family (19%), and credit cards (17%), according to the survey.

By contrast, only 11% said home equity would be the best capital source.

Despite significant funding challenges, including depressed home prices and a tight overall credit market, entrepreneurship rates have risen from 2006 through 2010, according to the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, a small-business research group in Kansas City, Mo.

The foundation has an annual Index of Entrepreneurial Activity but hasn?t yet measured the rate of new business creation during 2011, it says.

Here?s a look at some of your choices:

Peer Lending

A small but fast-growing segment of business owners have tapped relatively new capital sources that operate through websites.

Peer-to-peer loan sites, such as Prosper.com and LendingClub.com, allow lending directly between individuals. Interest rates depend on the borrower?s credit history. Only 4% of business owners surveyed in the Pepperdine study say this would be the most promising method of securing funds this year.

Crowdfunding, available on Kickstarter.com, IndieGoGo.com and other such sites, links fundraisers to a large pool of small-dollar contributors. The sites charge fees for the service, typically less than 10% of the capital raised.

Last September, Sung-Yoon Kang got a $5,000 loan through Prosper.com at a 27% interest rate and his wife, Dawn Kang, got a $3,000 loan from LendingClub.com at a 7.9% interest rate. The couple turned to peer lending after realizing they wouldn?t qualify for a traditional bank loan.

The Kangs, who don?t own a home, used the funds to purchase a food truck. They hope to launch the business Ka?Chi Inc., of West Chester, Pa., in the near future.

Asset-Based Credit

Asset-based lending and factoring got attention when banks slashed credit lines in the 2008 financial collapse. Total asset-based credit commitments grew 5% in the last year, according to a November 2011 survey by the Commercial Finance Association. This type of financing has been dominated by the retail and garments industries, but has spread to other business sectors that have accounts receivable or other assets, according to Brian Cove, chief operating officer at the association, a New York-based trade group.

Asset-based lenders extend loans that are backed by marketable securities, equipment, inventory, accounts receivable and other business assets.

Factors operate on a similar model, purchasing accounts receivables from a business in exchange for an advanced funding amount for each invoice. The Pepperdine study shows 5% of business owners believe factoring is the best way to raise capital.

Interest on the loans can top 20%. Rohit Arora, chief executive of Biz2Credit, a small-business lending broker based in New York, says he believes the interest rates and other related costs may come down as a result of increased competition among lenders.

David Godwin turned to factoring when he started ContinuityX Inc. last year. Within four months of launching, the technology services company, based in Metamora, Ill., had secured a $500,000 credit line from Forest Capital LLC, allowing Mr. Godwin to hire 14 employees and purchase new equipment.

?It jump-started our business,? says Mr. Godwin, who did not use his home equity but did tap personal savings and friends and family to cover other initial costs.

SBA loans

Many young start-ups face significant barriers securing bank financing because they don?t have a substantial track record of growth. But there are small signs that the credit crunch is easing, as lending standards become more flexible and as some borrowers become more willing and able to take on debt, according to recent data including one January survey of senior loan officers by the Federal Reserve.

Outstanding loans to small businesses have fallen each quarter since 2009, according to the most recent data from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, in an analysis of loans of less than $1 million. They totaled slightly less than $600 billion at the end of September 2011, 5% less than the year earlier.

One role of the U.S. Small Business Administration is to help banks make loans to riskier small businesses, while offering better terms such as a longer payback period. SBA loans are provided by traditional lenders, but a portion of each loan is backed by the government in the case the business owner defaults. Still, SBA loan recipients must adhere to the underwriting standards of the bank, which may include using personal property as collateral.

SBA lending hit a record in the government?s last fiscal year. But the jump was, in part, attributed to the larger loan amounts the agency agreed to back. Since October 2010, SBA lenders have been able to offer loans as large at $5 million, which are more profitable than the smaller loans start-ups typically request. (See this October 2011 story.)

In general, smaller firms have more success with these loans once they are established and ready for expansion capital.

Angel Investors

Some small businesses have had success seeking angel financing ? a segment that?s showing a revival of sorts. Most angel investors, of course, will wind up with an equity stake in your firm.

Some 39% of the $8.9 billion in total angel investments in the first half of 2011 went into seed and start-up ventures, up from 26% of $8.5 billion in total investments over the same period a year earlier, according to the University of New Hampshire?s Center for Venture Research.

It can be tricky to weed out the tire-kickers, says Paul Kedrosky, senior fellow at the Kauffman Foundation. Many individuals are angels ?in name only? and not likely to make investments as eagerly as professional investors, he notes.

Individual angels are increasingly coming together to invest as groups. That spreads risk among the group?s members. But it could create headaches for business owners who have to deal with a number of angels rather than just one or two investors.

Personal Credit and Savings

More than 70% of small businesses were launched using personal savings or assets, according to Elizabeth A. Duke, a governor on the Federal Reserve Board, who, last April, disclosed preliminary data from the Federal Reserve?s upcoming Survey of Consumer Finances.

Personal credit cards, as well as friends and family have grown in popularity during the downturn, and will likely remain an important avenue for entrepreneurs even after the economy rebounds.

Some entrepreneurs obtain business credit cards, which carry fluctuating?and often higher?interest rates while lacking consumer card protections. Delinquencies on business cards can also damage your personal credit score.

Pope visits Mexico pledging to fight drugs “evil”

LEON, Mexico (Reuters) – Pope Benedict arrived in Mexico on Friday promising to “unmask the evil” of drug trafficking in a country ravaged by gang violence that has killed 50,000 people in the past five years.

The pope began his three-day visit to the world’s second-most populous Catholic state in the central city of Leon, where he received one of the most exuberant welcomes of any of his foreign trips.

Tens of thousands of people, 20 deep in some places, lined the streets on his 22-mile (35-km) drive through the city.

He touched down in Mexico after making strong statements aboard his papal plane about the country’s spiraling drug war.

“We must do whatever is possible to combat this destructive evil against humanity and our youth,” he told reporters, referring to the violent conflict between rival drug cartels and the state that has killed 50,000 people since 2007.

“It is the responsibility of the Church to educate consciences, to teach moral responsibility and to unmask the evil, to unmask this idolatry of money which enslaves man, to unmask the false promises, the lies, the fraud that is behind drugs,” the pope added.

Raising his arms aloft as he exited the plane, Benedict descended the stairs slowly, holding the handrail. He was greeted by President Felipe Calderon and a group of children while crowds cheered and waved Vatican flags.

Addressing the masses gathered at the airport in a steady, measured tone, the pope, speaking in Spanish, said he had come as a “pilgrim of faith, of hope, and of love.”

“I will pray especially for those in need, particularly those who suffer because of old and new rivalries, resentments and all forms of violence,” said Benedict, adding that he hoped his message would also reach Mexicans outside of their homeland.

The bloodshed across Mexico was in the mind of many waiting to see Benedict in the city, a Roman Catholic stronghold that has avoided the worst of the brutal turf wars.

Throngs of Catholics dressed in white t-shirts and caps threw yellow and white confetti, having waited since early morning to see the pope pass. Many of them were young people let out of school for the day.

Several stood in front of a large banner that read “Pope, pray that the violence ends, pray that peace returns.” “Violence is the country’s biggest priority. There are some places where you can’t even set foot outside it’s so dangerous,” said 16-year-old Martin Zamora who hung the sign with his Catholic youth group.

“Many young people have decided to join up with organized crime instead of fighting it. That’s what the pope is coming here for, to help save young people.”

Benedict, who turns 85 next month, will rest for 24 hours to recover from jet lag. His main message will be delivered on Sunday at a massive outdoor service that hundreds of thousands of people are expected to attend.

The pope’s strong words on the drug menace should offer comfort to Calderon, who has staked his reputation on beating down the cartels. The government’s inability to stem the violence has eroded support for his conservative National Action Party (PAN), which has strong Catholic roots and faces an uphill struggle to retain the presidency in elections in July.

Calderon hailed Benedict’s arrival, saying it was of great significance at a time of “many hardships” for Mexico.

“Mexico has suffered, as your Holiness knows well, the ruthless and cruel violence of organized crime,” Calderon said in his welcome speech, which was followed by a performance of traditional folk dancers and mariachi musicians.

A survey by polling firm GCE published in the Milenio newspaper on Friday showed 72 percent of respondents wanted the pope to speak out on the security situation in Mexico.

ABUSE SCANDALS

Benedict, who also travels to Cuba next week, hopes to rally the faithful in Mexico, where more and more people are being lured to evangelical Protestant churches.

The German pope faces a challenge generating the same kind of fervor as his charismatic Polish predecessor, Pope John Paul II, who was beloved in Latin America and drew pulsating crowds when he criss-crossed the region during his 27-year papacy.

Highlighting the growing religious divisions in Mexico, a large Protestant church in Leon held a service with hundreds of worshippers on Thursday, prominently displaying a sign that read “We are not Roman Catholics.

The Vatican has been stung by accusations of child abuse by priests in parishes around the world – including revelations about Mexican religious leader Marcial Maciel, who founded a prominent Catholic order, the Legionaries of Christ.

Maciel, who died in 2008 at the age of 87, was disgraced by allegations of sexual abuse and drug addiction.

During the pope’s visit, religious scholar Bernardo Barranco will present a new book by ex-Legionaries with scores of leaked Vatican documents the authors say prove the Holy See knew about Maciel’s molestation of young boys and morphine use for decades.

“The enthusiasm (about the pope’s visit) felt in Leon, is not the same in the rest of the country. The abuses by Father Maciel have cast a shadow,” Barranco said in an interview.

Benedict has apologized for priest abuse in the past but has no plans to meet Mexican victims. 1

“There is so much suffering in Mexico that to narrowly focus on just one issue would be extreme,” said Father Jorge Martinez, an official from Mexico’s Episcopal Conference, when asked if the pope would address questions about Maciel’s legacy.

The pope heads to Cuba on Monday in a visit meant to bolster the position of the Church there and help the communist island move towards democracy. Communism, he said on Friday, no longer works in Cuba.

A national survey has found more than half of Australians believe the use of performance enhancing drugs in sport should be treated as a criminal matter.

The joint research project by Canberra and Griffith Universities surveyed 2,500 people aged over 18 about their opinions on drugs in sport.

Researchers questioned people over the phone about anti-doping policies and what punishments should be given to drug takers.

Canberra University’s Dr Terry Engelberg says the majority wanted police to be involved in future investigations of drugs in sport, such as steroids.

“Performance enhancing drug use is not criminalised in Australia at the moment, is not in any way,” he said.

“But 54 per cent of our respondents believe that performance enhancing drug use should be criminalised, but not just criminalised – investigations should be conducted by police officers, instead of sporting bodies.”

Dr Engelberg says respondents also said sporting clubs should face penalties as well.

“About two thirds of respondents also agreed that clubs should be penalised if one or more of their athletes were found to be using performance enhancing drugs.”

Around 80 per cent of the people surveyed also said they think positive drug tests should be made public.

It was August 2010 when Odd Future‘s Domo Genesis released his debut album, Rolling Papers, as a free Internet download, so when Wiz Khalifa announced that he would be releasing an LP with the same name a few months later, the rambunctious OFWGKTA crew of course took exception.

“Everyone on my friends list, tell that n—a Wiz Khalifa to give @damiergenesis his f—ing album title back. Wolf Gang,” Tyler, the Creator tweeted back in January 2011 after Khalifa announced his Rolling Papers LP.

The two have since put the drama behind them and even recorded and released their collaborative “Ground Up” last month. “We were both at the same studio in Santa Monica, and I just so happened to walk past him and I went into their — I don’t know, sh– just randomly happened,” Domo said when he and his merry band of OF misfits appeared on Wednesday’s “RapFix Live.”

Last September, Taylor Gang producer Cardo contributed “Shine” to Domo’s Under the Influence album, and he also made the beat for Domo and Khalifa’s first collab. DG admitted that at first his interactions with Wiz were awkward, but they ultimately vibed over the dreamy beat.

If the MCs’ first meeting was awkward, their first collaboration is anything but. Domo sets things off rapping about the changes he’s experienced since earning his hip-hop stripes. He’s clearly proud of all that he’s done, and Wiz’s chorus and song-closing verse echo the same sentiment, reminding rivals that he is self-made. “Everything you see, I did it on my own,” Khalifa harmonizes on the hook.

“The beat that I had was originally just for me, and I played it for him and he really liked it, so he jumped on it,” Domo said while fighting off his buddy Earl Sweatshirt, who kept interrupting.

“I knew he was gonna bring up the Rolling Papers thing, and it came up. It was cool — it happened a long time ago,” Domo said before Earl chimed in with a question of his own.

“So y’all friends now?” Earl asked.

1. The music industry is tough. You have to be versatile and dedicated. My biggest advice to anyone wanting to pursue music as a living is to spread your wings across many facets of the industry. If you feel you are very good on your instrument then get into teaching. Make sure you know your theory. Teachers with limited theory get caught out very quickly in this industry.

Teaching music is great to fall back on and gives you security particularly while you are waiting for bigger dreams. Let?s be honest ? when it comes to music, dreams are made in heaven.

And eventually work for others if you are good at it. Learn about all the tricks in MIDI and Audio recording and learn about all the latest music software out there including the skill of sampling,

3. Learn the art of composing your own music. Start talking about ways of making your compositions more interesting. If you can develop the skill of composing music in all genres and styles that could be a career in itself. Remember all the booming industries that need music. i.e. computer game industry. There are also ad agencies, music libraries and film music areas that you can explore. That said, it takes a while to develop the technique to compose in a versatile way. So get it right!

5. You need a thick skin in music. Musicians are sensitive, particularly about their own works. So be prepared to face a brick wall with your music, your playing etc. Be passionate and dedicated. If the song you submit to a publisher gets knocked back ? move on. As long as you believe in what you do eventually something will happen.

6. There are many egoists in the music industry. Let us be honest and say that most musicians are on an ego trip at times. Be humble ? don?t think you are the greatest thing around. Music is not a sport it is art. And there are many people as talented as you in whatever facet of the music industry you get involved in.

7. Get a web site. Create presence on the internet. Speaking from experience ? try and go independent as much as possible. The internet has changed music forever. With your web site you have the same web space as anyone else online. It all depends how you promote yourself. Send music to radio stations and magazines and ask for a review, playback or even interview. Link with as many people as possible and get listed in directories for your musical service.
